SC2 Heart of the Swarm released in Korea

Blizzard Entertainment celebrated the night before the launching of Heart of the Swarm on 12th – First expansion of 2 years old Starcraft 2 all over the world. Seoul, the heart of South Korea, was not an exception.

Blizzard Korea allowed only 879 to enter the event hall to avoid the unexpected situation. Blizzard Korea experienced the worst situation with the launch of Diablo3 before, so it seems they approached carefully with this event.

Because Blizzard Korea prepared only 1,000 collector’s edition packages of the game with the prize of tablet computer for the first purchaser, people gathered and made a long line from the early. In case of you do not know, Blizzard Korea sold the collector’s edition as limited edition in Korea by limiting the total number.

Itzik Ben Bassat, Executive VP of Global Publishing, and Nick, UI designer, Matt, Software engineer attended the event with 2 dozens of pro-gamers.

JD from EG-TL, Creator from Prime, Life from Startale, flash from KT, MVP from IM, Bisu from SK T1 played on the stage for fans. 2:2 matches were taking place on Hunters map, a popular map from Starcraft1. Hunters map will be available through Battle.net after the game is launching.

GOMTV boost Korean e-sports further

With the vanishing of MBC GAME, it seems Korean e-sports took steps backwards. However, GOMTV is moving aggressively in 2013 with the huge success of GSL, GomTV Starcraft2 League, from abroad.
GOMTV (Executive Director In-sik Bae) has announced the relocation of the GOMTV Mokdong Studio to near Samseong Station in Gangnam-gu, which will occur in mid-March. The new studio is named as GOMTV Gangnam Studio. Yes, Gangnam Style!

GOMTV expect they could take care of about 200 spectators at the new studio, which is more than double size comparing to the previous studio. The new location is more convenient to spectator due to COEX(Shopping, Theaters, Foods etc.) and other hotels are near.

With the opening of the GOMTV Gangnam Studio all studio broadcasting equipment will be switched to HD. Also it is expected that they could held tournaments in different games(beside Starcraft2) in the future because it is the one of main reasons to have a new bigger studio.

GOMTV expect 2013 will be the year of extension and a huge leap. With ‘Heart of the Swarm’, the expansion of Starcraft2, released in March and the new studio, they want e-sports fans all around world get more excited this year.

New Chairman for Korean e-sports association

Byung-hyun, Jeon, a member of the national, takes office as the chairman of Korean e-sports Association. He said “I want to resolve the negative aspects of games through e-sports” at the inaugural ceremony.

At the ceremony, several people from the government attended and Young-ho, Lee aka Flash in Starcraft 2 pro-gaming world attended as the representative of all Pro-gamers as well.

He also said Korean e-sports need to change to overcome the slump in recent years. He also insisted that the new plan for e-sports environment and the establishment of the system are needed to turn around. Therefore, he proposed 4 visions such as ▶Better communication ▶Build stronger organization throughout the county ▶Better supporting for Amateur e-sports ▶Build stronger association financially.

Korean e-Sports had fever over the last weekend

The fever started from the announcement from KeSPA(Korean eSports Association) that they won’t participate in GSL Season 4 and are not sure about future GSL participation. The announcement shocked many people include GOM TV – the host of GSL, ESF – e-Sports Federation, Blizzard Korea and for the most fans. It happened 2 months after Blizzard, KeSPA, GOM TV is held the day of vision declaration to cooperate developing Korean e-Sports.

ESF, mainly consists of GSL Starcraft2 players and staffs, immediately announced that they won’t participate in OSL – Ongamenet Starleague until KeSPA makes sure about future GSL participation.

KeSPA adjusted their announcement by joining GSL from Season 5 after ESF’s announcement. However, ESF did not change its previous stance because KeSPA still did not make clear about the future GSL participation.

Finally, the incident concluded by KeSPA. They announced that they will join GSL Season 4 and handed-in the list of players who will play for GSL.

Fans are very disappointed about KeSPA and Ongamenet. However, the most disappointment comes from Blizzard Korea. It seems they had absolutely no idea what is going on until the incident came up even though they are the mediator of all.
