[Interview] 6th Class of B&S Is Summoner

September 9th, 2011

Bae(left) and Hwang(right)

TIG interviewed JaeHyun Bae the PD of <Blade & Soul> and SungJin Hwang the director of system design yesterday.

The following interview is summarized from the full story at Thisisgame.com.

TIG > Many think there would be total 8 classes since 8 sages exists as NPCs. So what’s next?

In the beginning of the develpment, there used to be 6~10 concept nominees which are current NPCs’ classes. For now, 5 classes for players are fixed and 6th class is the summoner who has shown up in an earlier trailer. We are considering totally brand new classes we haven’t seen from any games so far.

TIG > What’s <B&S>’s end-content?

It would be the battle. We are aiming such contents that encompass PvP, PvE, solo play, end party play evenly.

TIG > When the guild system be updated?

The guild system will probably be updated at OBT or commercial service. In addition, we are working on personal connection system which is one of SNS features. We might even connect with external SNS like Facebook or Twitter.

TIG > A rumor says the commercial service could be delayed. Do you prefer to have another test before launching commercially?

We had a lot of feedback from the first CBT and it seems like it will happen in the 2nd CBT again. Well, actually we can start OBT right after couple of months if we like to do so. It is not so hard since there is not much to do except revising the current issues and expanding the world. But we got to think first if it is fun enough to play for not only gamers but also developers.

As we are going to have tons of feedback from this CBT, we need to work on them. But we also cannot delay until all the issues are done. So, as our CFO said at the earning report, the commercial service would be kicked off in somewhere around this year-end or the beginning of the next year.

TIG > The players complain that the collecting and craft systems are too boring.

For the collecting system, BOTs and workers are going to take over the market for sure as time passes. Indeed there are players who really like to collect in the game but they will be soon disinterested at it as their works are nothing to what the BOTs can do in the same period. At this situation, we cannot set the market price to individuals because that will eventually give much more profit to the BOTs.

So our answer is focused on casual players. We will also work on the feedback by, for example, placing essential ingredients in instant dungeons or to the boss monsters.

TIG > They also said RvR is boring since combo attack doesn’t work well and only single hits are preferable while PvP features breathtaking psychological battle. Any resolution?

There are hidden functions for each skill. Certain skills can block/cancel other certain skills but the players are, for now, at too low level to experience it. Some attack skills can actually be used as supportive skills in RvR.

TIG > How freely can we customize our characters?

Almost unlimited. NPCs in the game are actually made by not modelling but customizing each. I believe <B&S> will provide the most free customizing system ever so far.

TIG > What is <B&S>’s long-term plan?

Making people to play a game for a long time equals giving good experience to them. The point for the players is to meet with good people and good experience in the game.

Of course, the enchant system is a very attractive feature in order for us to hold our customers as long as we can.  I personally like it. But it is overused by both the players and the developers now. And unfortunately that caused the players hate it.

Since bunch of other games have it, we decided not to include it.

We are aiming a game that connects good people and provides fun to play. Inherently interaction between people were the key feature of MMO genre, but it went over to SNS recently. We should reflect this.

TIG > Recently NCsoft is trying to work with mobile platforms. Any plans for <B&S>?

We have so many of them. Since many people are connected via network today, it is natural to follow the trend.

What we have been thinking so far are, for example, text messege, collecting, craft, auction, guild and so on.

[Interview] B&S AD Kim “More Outfits Coming”

September 2nd, 2011

NCsoft has selected 50 internet cafes in Seoul to allow any one to play <Blade & Soul> during the 2nd CBT period.

TIG came across AD HyungTae Kim at an internet cafe nearby NCsoft headquater and asked a few questions about graphics and arts.

One of criteria for players to choose their outfits is how it looks like in NPCs. Then can the players wear the outfits of NPCs some day?

I’d correct the question to if they are available to the players. Every costume in the game is dressable. Even white mourning garments of HoSook, a Korean traditional ghost NPC in early story of <B&S>, can be dressed. But unfortunately they are not provided to public. You may expect more and more outfits.

What would you say about the best outfits available in the CBT?

I can’t tell exactly how to get them but would like to leave a hint. The outfits in the posture behind me(below in this article) are also available in this 2nd CBT. But I can’t imagine how long it would take for someone to get them…

In <B&S> the outfit does not consist of more than one piece and accessaries do not have visual appearance. What would say about them?

We have no plan for changing them. In designer’s perspective, there is a harmonious style in costumes and we have devoted to make the best items to match the outfit. Collecting all of them, it would look great.

Earrings and necklaces actually had visual graphics in the game but they seemed like dots and unnoticed. So we abandoned their appearance.

Tradiotional MMORPG costume system is somewhat like ready-made suits, isn’t it? For women, they dress up their best looking dress and matching shoes and necklace when going to parties. But they just wear casual clothings when going to office, right?

So don’t you want to feel little bit more special in the game? That’s why I used the term ‘Pret-a-Porter’ in the last interview I had.

I wanted to make the players feel they are hanging out in a party when playing the game. So I thought all-in-one design which is current outfit system is more suitable than the compound system. I am not saying it is an answer but a direction of <B&S>.

I believe there would be much less feedback on male characters than female characters have.

True. So I want to tell everyone that we are awaiting more feedback on male characters. Of course our development team is working on it very hard but we are having hard time improving it because of less feedback.

Then in what direction do you intend to make the male characters?

Nothing special. We are considering hair styles, face types, animations, etc. What we are currently thinking is that they are too ordinary.

It is quite difficult to give unique characteristics such as sleazy or evil guy styles to online game characters unlike console games. That’s why the boring characters are made, I guess. So we need more and more feedback on male characters.

What if the players want smaller thighs?

Reducing the size of thighs should match with others harmoniously too. I don’t like to hear such words like “I like this character but I won’t play him/her because I don’t like this part.”

It is your something like trade mark.

I know, so there might be some kind of limit in changing the style. Since we are not working on couple of things, we would like to keep updating their favorite styles. It is an idea of addition instead of change.

Since <B&S> features awesome graphics, I heard lots of people are put into the graphic team. So do costume and character designe groups have the most people among the graphic team?

Background and animation groups have the most developers. The character group consists of very few people in order to maintain same style in the course of the development. Yet they are so good. :)

I believe animation is a key to the play quality of the game. I dare to say that <B&S> has triple animation works than other well made online games.

What’s important in animation is not hitting but being hit. <B&S> provides various motions and reactions of being hit in accordance to various ways of hitting.

Not only human looking creatures but also every monsters in the game follow all the animations such as choking, airborne, tripping, or rolling.

That could stress the servers a lot. Actually the test server went down every hour.

So our server team is having very hard time improving it now. Incidentally, playing in a typical field of <B&S> actaully stresses the server as much as what a seige warfare of other MMORPGs does. In other words, we are very good at utilizing the server. (lol)

Does single character has lots of resources since they look magnificent?

We didn’t add extra polygons or use any special features. We used a feature called ‘mise en scene’ in film industry. It is about modelling overall composition, placement, color of background and characters, contrast in characters, light fall, and catching the light, and so on.

We managed to control it in just right balance so people think our graphics very good. As you might know if you played it, <B&S> is not a heavy game.

I see so many monsters out there but they all look different.

We prefer change in fighting style when facing new monsters in new regions rather than making fresh new designed monsters. So you will not be playing against differently designed monsters but with same boring fighting mechanism. Our animation team is working hard on skill motions.

I guess that’s why I feel like playing PvP against human looking monsters.

We weight more on human versus human fighting in <B&S>. Yes, there are monsters but we count human relationship more. There will be more action based human enemies and monsters for you.

B&S Likely to Go OBT Without 3rd CBT

August 29th, 2011

NCsoft kicks off 2nd CBT of <Blade & Soul> today in the largest size ever in MMORPG history in Korea. Industry guesses the CBT would be the last test for NCsoft prior to upcoming OBT which is set to launch this year.

Total 4 servers and 50 PC bangs will be operated for the 2nd CBT. each of the servers will sustain maximum 7,000 gamers which will eventually add up to 30,000 CCU with the PC bangs.

The 2nd CBT features gathering and craft systems and antagonistic relationship of players in addtion to introducing new class Assassine and 10 instant dungeons.

“We plan to start OBT within this year but it won’t be so long even if it kicks off late,” said JaeHo Lee the vice president of NCsoft.

Since the 1st CBT took place in April and the next one is taking place 4 months after the first one, there is not quite enough time to have 3rd test before having OBT this year.

In addition to that, NCsoft gives away limited costume items that can be used at OBT to the testers this time while the 1st CBT participants were given priority over the 2nd CBT in the past.

So as far as we can presume, NCsoft is hoping to kick off OBT without having CBT three times.

“We have no further plan now as we do not address our schedule until we believe in our game’s completion,” said NCsoft. “The amount of work we would be dealing with depends on the feedback and result of the 2nd CBT. So the next move would be fixed after this test.”
