Top 10 Korean Game Industry Issues in Last Half of 2010

1. M&A

Nexon which has done M&A every year for last 6 years has also fully acquired Nclips, the developer of <Ever Planet>, in the last half of 2010. NCsoft, Neowiz Games, CJ Internet, and other major companies also did not stop doing so.

Overseas companies also have done it?aggressively. Chinese game publisher Shanda Games has taken over Korean developer Eyedentity Games, the developer of <Dragon Nest>. International companies like Disney, Zinga, EA, Perfect World, and Google have acquired game companies this year as well.

2. Cinderella Law

MCST and MEGF have agreed with the Cinderella Law which forces the game server to shut down at midnight in order for gamers under age 16 to protect from game addiction. As both ministries have right to restrict gamers under 16 and over 16 respectively, game industries will likely be hard to evade double regulation from them.

3. e-Sports IP Lawsuit

The first hearing over the IP of <Starcraft> has taken place on last December 10. Blizzard Entertainment has demanded MBC Plus Media US$310,000. The second hearing is held on Jaunary 28.

4. G-Star 2010

G-Star 2010 in Busan has gathered 280,000 visitors and achieved 166 business accomplishments which are the most successful performance ever.

5. Big 3 MMORPGs

Korea’s big 3 MMORPGs, do-whatever-you-want-to-do <ArcheAge>, free-targeting action <TERA>, and oriental auto-targeting action-oriented <Blade & Soul>, are taking their own lines. <TERA> is coming first among the three on January 11. <ArcheAge> has done CBT twice in 2010 and <Blade & Soul> will likely to begin testing next year.

6. Motion Controllers

The next generation motion controller PS Move and Xbox360 Kinect were released in Korea on September 15 and November 18 respectively.

7. Global Starcraft 2 League

On September 4, Global Starcraft 2 League has begun. GSL is on the air all over the world in real time.

8. Smart Phone

As smart phone and tablet PC get popular, Nexon, NHN, Wemade, YD online,
and CJ Internet have started smart phone game?development. However, the fact the voluntary restriction on the games at open market is not solved yet is slowing the market growth down. Korean games are released to the overseas markets first now.

9. Social Game Genre

There was not even a market for social game only about few years ago. But it has grown with Facebook since 2007 and is forming a huge market with US$900m now.

Noritown, a Korean social game developer, anticipated the first half of 2011 would be a important turning point in the social game market.

10. NCsoft’s Pro Baseball

NCsoft has filed their willingness of founding 9th pro baseball team in Korea to Korean Baseball Organization(KBO) on December 22. It excited not only gamers or game industry who expect it would improve the recognition of game from society, but also baseball fans and baseball industry who love to make its market bigger and rich.

The decision of KBO will be made on January 11. If NCsoft is allowed, its team will participate the minor league in 2012 first and will be promoted to major league in 2013.

Watch Witchblade in KUF2

NHN released a gameplay video of a new class witchblade of <Kingdom Under Fire 2>. The witchblade is a female Darkelf with special talents in incredible agility and ice magic.

“We have presented what action strategy game is by introducing a class which is a content that exposes diversity and personality of the gamers in the most?distinguishable?way. 3 more new classes like berserker and gunblade who will lead the game story will be introduced soon as well,” said SangYoon Lee the producer.

Watch and Wait for TERA OBT

NHN released new trailers of <TERA> at its brand site which is newly open as the OBT is coming. The first trailer shows the battle field and politics system for the first time. The second one is a class introductory trailer that shows which role they would play.

Further information is available at the brand site. The official site will be renewed with much more information about system, item, skill, quest, and so forth on December 30 when the pre selection event starts on.

Buying Virtual Item Is Indeed Illegal

The Supreme Court of Korea has judged the site for cash transaction on online game virtual item is a harmful material to?juniors. One of the sites has lost its lawsuit over the?revocation of the designation announcement of the harmful?material?to juniors on December 27.

From now on, all the cash transaction sites must run adult authentication and indicate harmful material sign to all visitors.

The companies had appealed that the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Commission on Youth Protection did not follow legal steps and trading virtual items cannot be seen as promoting gambling. To that, the courts said “the virtual items are liquidity and could also be considered as gambling if the buyers get clung to them. Therefore cash transaction site also have great responsibility. In addition, designating harmful material is legitimate as the number of leak of personal information and illegal acts are getting increased.”

Kinect on MMORPG?

Gameprix introduced its future plan of supporting Kinect on its MMORPG <Divine Soul> on last December 22. It would be the first MMORPG supporting motion controller ever if this deal works out.

“<Divine Soul> already supports 3D visual graphic which is the latest trend of the game industry. Connecting online game and Kinect will provide new exciting experience with the new and simple UI beyond the typical keyboard, mouse, and?joy pad environment,” said JongJin Park the director of development. “We still need to talk with Microsoft more for the further process.”

Since it is yet decided, the connecting means between PC and Kinect is not fixed. If the development goes on, it would likely support Europe where much more console gamers live first.
